Space Remains Open in York County’s Safety Town Program

Space remains open in York County’s Safety Town, a weeklong program designed to teach 4- and 5-year-olds about life safety.

Safety Town is a small-scale town set up in four York County elementary schools across the month of July. Each session lasts a week, running Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

YorkCountyLogoIncluded in the town are portable buildings, sidewalks, roads and street signs. Each day focuses on a different topic, including traffic and pedestrian safety, fire safety, personal safety and home safety, according to a news release from York County.

Parents are required to attend Safety Town on Friday for a fair and completion ceremony. During that event, each child will receive a certificate, a Safety Town backpack, a T-shirt and a bicycle helmet. Funding for the event comes from contributions and sponsorships from area businesses, community agencies, civic organizations, county government and individual citizens, according to the release.

Registration must be done in person at the Community Services office in the County Administration Center at 224 Ballard St. in Yorktown. Registration is accepted 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. York County residents may enroll their children for $25, while noncounty residents may do so for $35.

This year’s Safety Town schedule is as follows:

July 7 – 11 Coventry Elementary School (No space remains)
July 14 – 18 Coventry Elementary School
July 21 – 25 Yorktown Elementary School
July 28 – Aug. 1 Waller Mill Elementary School
