Glenn Close and her husband, David Shaw, will visit the William & Mary campus this weekend. Close will speak to registered conference guests and receive the Cheek Medal Award, along with Shaw, for excellence in the arts.

Glenn Close is coming to Williamsburg and her costumes will be on display and open to the public at the Muscarelle Museum on Sunday.

On Saturday, Close will arrive at Sadler Center Commonwealth Auditorium on the William & Mary campus for a 3 p.m. chat with audience members that will include a moderated question-and-answer session and discussion. Open only to registered guests, the talk is part of the second annual industry festival from W&M’s Arts & Entertainment Alumni Council that’s taking place Thursday through Sunday.

According to council board member Jimmy Finn, Close – a W&M alumna – will speak about lessons she’s learned in the film industry as an actor, producer, director and creator. A Conversation With Glenn Close, as it’s been named, is one of many panels at the festival that also include:

  • Comedy: A Serious Business – a discussion by stand-up comics, writers and producers about how to make a living being funny and how technology has helped them do just that
  •  Funding Films in the Future – a panel of film makers and producers that will talk about alternative funding methods for films like Kickstarter
  • Dress for Success: A Costume Design Panel – speakers will address how designing costumes to compliment the setting and characters of a story
  • Broken Records: A New Way to Sell and Finance Music – another panel of industry insiders that will discuss how to make money in today’s music industry
  • And a few more…

Registration for the festival, themed The Business of Show: The Arts & Entertainment in Dollars and Cents, is $36 for W&M students, faculty and staff; $109 for W&M classes of 2009-2013, and $172 for all W&M alumni and other guests. Those interested can register at the festival’s website until 10 a.m. Friday — or until tickets sell out.

A career in costume

A way community members can catch up on Close’s career, though it will be after her appearance, is to see the exhibit opening this Sunday at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. The exhibit, called Glenn Close: a Life in Costume, will display an array of Close’s famous costumes, like the ones she wore when she took on the role of: Cruella De Vil in “101 Dalmatians,” Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard,” Albert Nobbs in “Albert Nobbs” and Patty Hewes in “Damages.”

Close’s costumes will be on display this Sunday until Jan. 12. Tickets to the exhibit are $15 but free to museum members, faculty, staff and students. For ticketing information, interested parties can call 757-221-2700 or visit the Muscarelle Museum’s website.

An honor from the college

During their time on campus, Close and her husband David Shaw will also receive the 2013 Cheek Medal Award for, according to the Muscarelle Museum’s website, “their monumental contributions to the arts.” Shaw is the managing partner of private investment group Black Point Group Inc. and Close is a three-time Tony Award winning actress whose career also boasts six Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globes and three Emmy Awards.

The Cheek Medal Award was created in 1986 by the late director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Leslie Cheek Jr. to award, according to the W&M website, a “person who has substantially contributed to the field of museum, performing or visual arts.”
