A Newport News woman is facing charges after a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 64 West that shut down both lanes near Camp Peary for about an hour Thursday.

Virginia State Police Spokesperson Corinne Geller said the name of the woman wasn’t available Thursday night. She is facing a charge of making an unsafe lane change due to the incident.

She was driving her Chevrolet Cavalier on Interstate 64 West when she came upon stopped traffic near mile marker 239. In order to avoid the vehicles, she swerved to the left, where she struck a guardrail, causing her car to re-enter the westbound lanes. She then swerved to the left to avoid traffic, striking a westbound tractor-trailer.

Both the Cavalier and the tractor-trailer ended up in the woods on the side of the road. The woman was taken to Riverside Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not harmed.

Virginia State Police responded to the incident at 12:18 p.m. The road was shut down as the contents of the tractor-trailer — which were not hazardous — were offloaded so a tow truck would be able to extract it from the woods. The truck was out of the woods and the lanes reopened by 2:25 p.m.
