VDOT to Complete JRB Work Over Weekend

The Virginia Department of Transportation will finish up work on the James River Bridge this weekend, but motorists should still anticipate single-lane, weekend closures.

Crews with VDOT will install the last set of panels for the bridge’s grid deck replacement project that started in September. During the closure, traffic will flow in both directions but will be reduced to one lane for both north- and southbound traffic. The lane closures will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue until 5 a.m. Monday.

Over the weekend, crews will install the last 15 panels of bridge span grid deck needed to complete the work. Additionally, crews will perform four brief bridge lifts on Monday to test the functionality of the counterweights of the bridge lift mechanism. The lifts, which last up to 15 minutes, will occur between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Motorists should use extreme caution when using the crossover that connects the north- and southbound sides of the bridge. The Interstate 664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) can be used as an alternate route to travel to southside Hampton Roads.

Motorists are encouraged to call 511 or the Traffic Information Line at (757) 361-3016, visit www.511virginia.org, or listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 1680 AM for current traffic and travel information.
