Work will resume on the James River Bridge grid deck replacement project on Friday night.
Single-lane, weekend closures for both north- and southbound traffic will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue until 5 a.m. Monday. During the closure, traffic will still flow in both directions, but motorists should anticipate delays.
At least two additional weekend lane closures are planned until the bridge work is completed. The weekend, single-lane closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. Dec. 7 to 5 a.m. Dec. 10 and from 9 p.m. Dec. 14 to 5 a.m. Dec. 17.
In addition, crews will perform four bridge lifts on Monday to confirm the functionality of the counterweights of the bridge lift mechanism. The lifts last up to 15 minutes and occur between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when using a crossover on the bridge, and need to play close attention to lane markings. For an alternate route, the Virginia Department of Transportation suggests taking the Interstate 664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.
Motorists are encouraged to call 511 or the Traffic Information Line at (757) 361-3016, visit http://www.511virginia.org or listen to 1680 AM for traffic and travel information.
