VPRJ celebrates veterans day

On Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail Superintendent Tony Pham honored veterans of the armed services who are currently employed with VPRJ at a luncheon held at the facility. Funded by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4639, the luncheon was an opportunity for Superintendent Pham to pay tribute to VPRJ employees who served, and for those employees to meet and connect with the local VFW.

“VPRJ is home to several veterans who have served in our nation’s armed forces, and I am proud to work alongside them every day,” said Superintendent Pham. “Many of these men and women have already sacrificed a great deal for our country; they’ve served with honor and distinction, some of them are retired military, and yet, they choose to continue serving their community even after leaving the service by applying to work for a correctional institution.”

“Corrections is one of the most stressful careers a person can have,” continued Superintendent Pham. “This is a job which tests your resolve and your intellect on a daily basis. I have individuals working for me now who could fully retire if they so choose, but they have a need to continue to serve the public and put the skills they learned during their military service to good use by protecting the community they know and love. As an immigrant who was able to come to this country from Vietnam largely because of the sacrifice of thousands of U.S. soldiers, I feel a particular duty to ensure that these men and women are honored for their service.”

“The VFW is proud to honor those who served and continue to serve,” said Chaplain Jim Anderson of VFW Post 4639. “The officers are a fine example of prior service members who continue to serve their community as well as their country after their military service; we salute them.”

Chaplain Jim Anderson and other members associated with VFW Post 4639 approached Mr. Pham earlier in the year expressing their desire to show support for veterans currently employed with VPRJ by sponsoring a luncheon on Veterans Day. Employees were treated to a fully catered lunch provided by Sal and Mimma’s, and were also able to connect with fellow veterans from the VFW who were onsite for the event. VPRJ is proud to recruit, hire, and retain veterans looking to begin a career in the field of Corrections.

Additionally, members of the Patrick Henry Disabled American Veterans Chapter 34 also reached out to Mr. Pham earlier in the year, wanting to show support and gratitude towards VPRJ inmates who had.
