United Way of the Virginia Peninsula School Kindness Week

From November 12th – 16th, schools across the Virginia Peninsula participated in United Way of the Virginia Peninsula’s School Kindness Week. Also aligning with American Education Week, School Kindness week brought the joy of kindness to the classroom and provided students a week to see how their individual acts of kindness affects themselves, their friends, classmates, their school, and entire community.

Students participated in multiple activities throughout the week to show kindness such as, writing kindness essays on what kindness means to them, collecting coins for their kindness coin drive, participating in kindness theme days to show there is not just one way to be kind, and schools handed out kindness stickers to students who were caught being kind to their classmates and friends. Over 30,000 students participated, within approximately 50 schools across Gloucester, Mathews, Williamsburg/James City County, York County, Poquoson, Newport News and Hampton.

School Kindness Week is only one portion of the larger mission of the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula to spread kindness to the whole community. The Kindness United campaign is in place to inspire positive change to unite all people of the community behind one goal of kindness: a goal that, although not a new concept, is unfortunately absent in many places.

Through kindness, all members of society can grow. Adults can learn that all acts of generosity, no matter how small, can have a domino effect on those around them, spreading joy and inspiring others to follow in suit. Everyone can be a role-model for the children of the community to learn from as they develop into kind members of the community themselves. All people have a significant part to play in this mission to build a brighter community for today and for the future. We only ask that you live, laugh, and love united with those around you, and to be kind. Always.
