Speed Camera Enforcement to Begin at WJCC Schools

(James City County)

JAMES CITY COUNTY — The James City County Police Department announced it will begin enforcing its automated photo speed enforcement program at seven public schools starting Wednesday.

Citations will now be issued by mail to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by 10 mph or more when school zone lights are flashing, according to police. These are civil violations carrying a $100 fine and will not impact license points or insurance. All violations are reviewed for accuracy prior to a citation being issued, according to officials.

To date, over the 30-day warning period, more than 7,600 warnings have been issued since the program launched on Sept. 8.

JCCPD noted school zones are clearly marked with speed limit signs, flashing lights and advance warning indicators. The speed cameras will operate on school days when children are present and school zone lights are flashing.

Enforcement will be active at the following schools:

  • Stonehouse Elementary
  • Clara Byrd Baker Elementary
  • Norge Elementary
  • D.J. Montague Elementary
  • James River Elementary
  • Toano Middle
  • Lafayette High

Officials said they will continue to work with the school system to monitor and address any issues regarding light operation or obstructed signage. To report malfunctioning beacons, contact Williamsburg-James City County Schools at 757-565-3838.
