WILLIAMSBURG — Jamestown High School placed first overall in Virginia’s 2025 Dominion Energy Envirothon State Competition held at University of Mary Washington May 18-19.

The competition is administered by the Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts. Jamestown competed with teams representing 16 different high schools throughout Virginia to earn the title of State Champions.

Envirothon competitions consist of five “in-the-field” test stations — soils, wildlife, aquatics, forestry and a current environmental issue — which challenge teams to answer questions in both written and hands-on formats. During an oral presentation, teams present their environmental solution to industry and natural resource professionals who serve as judges. The issue for the 2025 Dominion Energy Envirothon was “Roots and Resiliency,” and teams presented land management plans for the Monacan Indian Nation’s land in Amherst.

“Dominion Energy is committed to environmental stewardship and empowering the next generation of leaders,” said Hunter A. Applewhite, President of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation. “Envirothon exemplifies both by challenging students to think critically about real-world environmental issues and inspiring them to find innovative solutions.”

The Jamestown team will travel to Calgary, Alberta, Canada July 20-26 to represent Virginia as they compete at the National Conservation Foundation’s International Envirothon against teams from across the United States, Canada, Singapore, and China for a chance to earn thousands of dollars in scholarship prizes.

The Jamestown High School Envirothon team, supported by the local Colonial SWCD, is returning to the International competition, where they placed 16th overall and first in Forestry, after having won the Virginia title in 2024.
