Josh Powell Named New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University freshman wide receiver Josh Powell was honored Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Powell was named the Offensive Rookie of the Week following his performance on Saturday in a 42-38 CNU loss at Salisbury University.

Powell caught four passes from sophomore quarterback Connor Barry, with two going for touchdowns. In all, he registered 131 yards receiving for the night. Powell’s first career touchdown came on a 65-yard scoring play midway through the first quarter against the Sea Gulls. He reached the endzone a second time with 3:26 remaining in the first half on a ten-yard strike that put the Captains ahead for the first time in the game.

Powell is a graduate of Maury High School and a native of Norfolk, Va. He has played in all four games for the Captains, and has now made six total receptions for 159 yards. He is averaging 26.5 yards per catch and 39.8 yards per game.

Christopher Newport is now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. The Captains will play the Red Devils of Dickinson College (2-2) on Saturday at TowneBank Stadium in a 1:00 p.m. start. The game will be the final non-conference action of the season for the Captains.
