City Applies for VDOT Grant to Repave Streets

City of Williamsburg logoNew street improvements may be coming to the City of Williamsburg in 11 different street sections in 2015.

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Revenue Sharing program is a grant-based funding system that matches localities 50 percent on some transportation projects. The program was recently expanded to allow fund matching for the resurfacing of roads.

At Thursday’s City Council meeting, City Engineer Aaron Small presented the members with a list of 11 sections of roads that he thinks would be good candidates for the grant. Those sections are:

  • North Henry Street from Lafayette Street to city limits
  • Parkway Drive from Second Street to Colonial Parkway
  • Capitol Landing Road from Lafayette Street to Page Street
  • Merrimac Trail from Capitol Landing Road to City Limits
  • York Street from Page Street to city limits
  • Jamestown Road from South Boundary Street to city limits
  • South Boundary Street from Francis Street to South Henry Street
  • All of Ireland Street
  • South Henry Street from Francis Street to Mimosa Drive
  • South Henry Street from College Creek to Route 199
  • All of Yorkshire Drive, including all cul-de-sacs

The estimated cost for the project is $800,000 and the city hopes their contribution of $400,000 would be matched with state money through VDOT.  The grant request was sent to VDOT and the city expects to hear back in June.
