NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University will begin defense of its NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Title on Friday, as the Captains travel to Chester, Pennsylvania, to play Hobart College.
The Captains, 21-6, will take on the Statesmen for the first time ever on Friday on the campus of Widener University. Game time is scheduled for 5:10 p.m.
The host school will play Roger Williams University in second opening round game on Friday 7:40 p.m.at the Schwartz Center in Chester.
CNU received an automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA Tournament after winning the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday over the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Hobart, located in Geneva, New York, won the Liberty League title at home with a victory over St. Lawrence on Sunday.
This marks the eighth straight NCAA appearance for the Captains, and 27th in the 56-year history of the men’s basketball program. The Captains defeated Mount Union in Fort Wayne, Indiana, last March for the first-ever National Championship for the Captains. CNU has a 33-25 all-time record in NCAA play.
Christopher Newport and Hobart were scheduled to play in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in March of 2020, when the game at the Freeman Center, and the rest of the tournament, was canceled due to COVID. This is Hobart’s first trip back to the NCAA’s since that tournament.
The winners of Friday’s opening round games will meet on Saturday night at 7:40 p.m.in the second round.
