YORK COUNTY — A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle on Route 17 at the intersection with Washington Square Drive in York County and died from his injuries Monday evening.

Virginia State Police (VSP) said it is investigating the fatal bicycle crash that occurred at 8:25 p.m. on Jan. 29.

According to VSP, a 2000 Ford Expedition heading south on Route 17 had a green light at the intersection and was proceeding through when it was unable to avoid striking the bicyclist, who was dressed in dark, non-reflective clothing.

The bicyclist, 60-year-old Leroy F. Chatham Jr. of Yorktown, was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.

The driver of the Expedition, 53-year-old James Clark of Newport News, remained on the scene. VSP said neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be contributing factors.

The crash remains under investigation.
