ICYMI: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Closures Around the Historic Triangle

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Here is how local offices and services are impacted by the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.

James City County

According to James City County, county offices, facilities, services, libraries and courts will observe the following schedule for Martin Luther King Jr. Day:  
County Offices:
Closed Jan. 15.

James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center:
Open Jan. 15.

Parks:
All County parks are open year-round.

Park Stores and Guest Services Offices:
Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Little Creek Reservoir Park, James City County Marina and Freedom Park office/stores are closed Jan. 15.

Tewning Road Convenience Center:
Closed on Mondays.

Jolly Pond Road and Toano Convenience Centers:
Open Jan. 15.

Garbage Transfer Station:
Open Jan. 15.

Curbside Recycling:
No change to current schedule.

Libraries:
Closed Jan. 15.

Courts:
Closed Jan. 15.

City of Williamsburg 

According to the City of Williamsburg, city offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 15. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street and Quarterpath Recreation Center. 

Waller Mill Park will follow normal operating hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Garbage will be collected on its regular schedule on Monday and Tuesday; there is no recycling collection during the week of Jan. 15. 

For water emergencies after hours, weekends, and holidays call 757-220-2331. More information can be found at williamsburgva.gov/publicworks. 

Those who need to pay a city bill when offices are closed are encouraged to use the 24-hour bill payment dropbox located at the front of the Municipal Building at 401 Lafayette St. for city transactions. Payments can also be made online. Dropbox payments made on Monday, Jan. 15 will not be posted until Tuesday, Jan. 16, the city said. 

York County

According to York County, the following government offices and courts will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 15:

  • County government offices
  • Courts
  • York-Poquoson Social Services
  • Virginia Cooperative Extension
  • York County Libraries

The Transfer Station, Recycling Drop-off, and VPPSA Compost Facility located at the Waste Management Center will be open; however, the on-site administrative offices will be closed, the county said.

Garbage and recycling are not affected by the holiday. The county reminds residents to place their trash and recycling containers at the roadside by 7 a.m. on their regular collection day.
