Three-Vehicle Crash on I-64 Claims Life of 72-year-old Woman

YORK COUNTY — A Newport News woman is dead after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in York County Friday night.
According to Virginia State Police (VSP), the accident occurred at approximately 8:03 p.m. at the mile marker 243 Busch Gardens exit.
Police said the driver of a 2009 Honda Civic, 72-year-old Carol E. Mitchell, was traveling westbound when she attempted to make a lane change and sideswiped a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by 33-year-old Kierra Marie Murray of Newport News, causing the Outlander to run off the road before striking a guardrail. The Honda came to rest in the center lane of the interstate and was struck from behind by a 2006 Buick Lacrosse.
Mitchell was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, police said.
The driver of the Mitsubishi and her front seat passenger were both transported to Riverside Regional Hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, according to VSP.
The driver of the Buick, 30-year-old Cody Ryan Butschillinger of Barhamsville, did not suffer any injuries.
Neither alcohol nor speed are considered contributing factors, police said.
