Furry Friends Feature: Small Critters that are Big on Love

Name Your Own Adoption Fee for Small Critters is now in effect at The Heritage Humane Society. Now through Nov. 12, 2023.

While most people associate dogs and cats with animal shelters, The Heritage Humane Society is also the temporary home to homeless small critters – rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, rats, ferrets, reptiles, birds and more. Year to date, 63 small pets have been adopted.

Meet these adoptable small critters

On any given day the shelter has no idea what little souls will be arriving at its doors in need of help finding their forever homes. Recently the surprise of the day was a bearded dragon. The Name Your Own Adoption Fee for Small Critters invites interested adopters to pay what they’d like for the small critter pet of their choosing.

Currently, they include rabbits, guinea pigs and gerbils. Each can be viewed online at the shelter’s website, which is updated throughout each day.

  • Rabbits. Meet fluffy bunnies Albus Bundledore and Oreo.
  • Guinea pigs. Select from Fluff-nee, Ahsoka, Leia, Coco, Roman, Jackson, James, Stick, Brick, Ponch and John.
  • Gerbils. Say hello to Cupcake and Ash.

Small critters, same responsibility as bigger pets

The Heritage Humane Society shares that small does not mean easier. There are times when the shelter along with others nationwide will have potential adopters share that they are selecting a small critter as a starter pet or as a first pet for a child. The shelter encourages potential adopters to do their small pet homework and make sure adopting a small critter is right for them. For example, while a small pet does not need to be walked, they still need to be fed daily, their enclosures cleaned, and they still need to be checked regularly by a veterinarian.

Unable to adopt?

For pet lovers who may not be able to adopt, there are still ways to help the shelter care for small pets in need. The top small critter wish list items are timothy hay, small critter bedding, small critter food (guinea pig, rabbit, gerbil, hamster, or rat), and enrichment chew toys. The shelter has a full supply wish list online along with an Amazon Wish List for turnkey ordering and delivery.

The Heritage Humane Society has over 200 dogs, cats and small pets currently in their care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from 12 to 4:30 p.m., Tues. through Sun.
