Chinese Community Celebrates the End of School Year
Peninsula Chinese American Association held its annual Pig Roast picnic in Newport News Park on Saturday, June 3 to celebrate the end of the school year and the beginning of the summer. It also presented achievement awards to deserving students at this gathering.
Approximately 200 people attended the event, including Virginia Delegate Shelly Simonds, Virginia Senator Monte Mason, and Newport News Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany III.
Peninsula Chinese American Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes fellowship and to share Chinese culture in the community. It also oversees a Chinese School on Peninsula.
James City County: Moorman Reappointed as General Registrar
The Electoral Board of James City County announced that it unanimously voted to reappoint Dianna Moorman as General Registrar at its regular meeting on May 9. Ms.
Moorman’s term will run for four years, beginning on July 1.
Board members Perry DePue, Curt Stoldt and Dorothea E. Matthews praised her service: “Ms. Moorman has served our County with dedication, knowledge and purpose, ensuring that our elections are honest and fair and are perceived to be so by our voters. She has navigated through the difficult last four years where the election laws were changed significantly, and is in the last stages of construction at the new Office of Elections, all designed to make the voting experience as pleasant as possible as voters exercise their right to vote. Under her tutelage, The Office of Elections staff is dedicated and highly competent, a tribute to her leadership and caring.”
Sons of the American Revolution Service of Prayer and Thanksgiving
The Williamsburg Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the clergy of Bruton Parish Church are inviting the community to the 38th Annual Fourth of July Service of Prayer and Thanksgiving Tuesday, July 4, at 10:00 a.m.
The service will be conducted by Bruton clergy, assisted by SAR members and be followed by a ringing of the Virginia Liberty Bell.
Bruton Parish Church is located on Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg.
James City County Social Services to Close June 27 for Staff Development, Reopen June 28
The James City County Department of Social Services office will close on Tuesday, June 27 at 11:30 a.m. for staff development. The office will reopen on Wednesday, June 28 at 8 a.m.
The County said the agency drop box located in the parking lot of the James City County Human Services Center, 5249 Olde Towne Road, can be used to leave applications and other paperwork.
Those needing to report suspected child abuse or neglect should call the Child Abuse hotline at 757-259-3201, or call the Adult Abuse hotline at 757-259-3115 to report suspected adult abuse, neglect or exploitation, the county said.
The county said voicemail messages left on the eligibility line — 757-259-3131 — will be returned on June 28. Reports on changes and applications are also accepted on the CommonHelp website at commonhelp.virginia.gov.
James City County Clean County Commission Seeks New Member Applications
The Clean County Commission — a coalition of local volunteers dedicated to promoting recycling, litter control, environmental education and beautification projects — is accepting applications for new members.
