Virginia Living Museum’s “Bird of Fall” photo contest list of winners and honorable mentions includes two Williamsburg women.
Wendy Nelson of Williamsburg took second place amateur for “Still Life with Bird,” and Inge Curtis, also of Williamsburg, received an honorable mention for her photo “Goldfinch.”
“The response to our photo contest was more than we could hope for,” said museum Development Director Carolyn Cuthrell. “We’re fortunate to have so many talented photographers out in nature capturing such beautiful and interesting images of the birds that make Virginia their home (or birds native to Virginia).
“The judges had a challenge narrowing down the more the than 200 entries and ultimately selecting the winners.”
Photos were judged on four criteria: technical, composition, esthetic and capturing the moment. The contest and exhibit are partially sponsored by the Newport News Arts Commission.
“Crowd Pleaser,” a photo of a screech owl by Robert Schamerhorn of Richmond, was named best in show, and Jerry Hughes of Newport News won first place professional for “Got One,” a photo of an osprey catching a fish.
First place amateur went to Rob Sabatini of Mechanicsville for “Goose Landing in the Marsh” and Denise Martin of Glen Allen took third place amateur for “Hummingbird in Nest.”
Honorable mentions also went to Heather Bautista, Virginia Beach; Robert Bielawski, Norfolk; Harold Lanna, Henrico and Levi Tarr, Hampton.
The exhibit will also include photos by Don Boyd, Hampton; Chuck Dufor, Rockville, MD; Jim Hansen, Hampton; Jerry Hughes, Newport News; Shelly Kelly, Hampton; Nicolas Kotula, Richmond; Jaclyn Lindsay, Norfolk; Jesse Nelson, Williamsburg; Charles Sallette, Henrico, and John Siderius, Hampton.
The winning photos will be on exhibit at the Living Museum from Jan. 12 through Feb. 3.
