NEW KENT — John Spiak, Athletic Director at New Kent High School, was recently named the Virginia High School League’s Region 3A 2024-2025 Athletic Director of the Year.

According to the New Kent County School District, Spiak began his career at New Kent High School 14 years ago as a science teacher. During that time, he also served as the coach for boys and girls indoor and outdoor track and the cross country team. Eleven years ago, he took on the role of Athletic Director.

“You will rarely encounter an athletic director with the level of commitment, passion, and supportive nature that Mr. Spiak exemplifies,” said NKHS Principal Allison Strickland. “His organizational skills, tireless work ethic, and ability to motivate student-athletes set him apart as a truly exceptional athletic director.”

This is Spiak’s second time receiving the honor, which is voted on by fellow regional athletic directors in recognition of outstanding leadership, service and commitment to high school athletics.

“It feels nice to be voted for by my peers for the second time,” Spiak said when discussing the honor. Reflecting on his time as athletic director, he noted that his favorite memories include the six state championships earned by NKHS teams, adding that he hopes to celebrate even more success this year.

Spiak credits much of his inspiration to a rival coach he encountered earlier in his career while coaching in Waynesboro. “He always made a point to be friendly, welcoming, and respectful, even to opponents,” Spiak said. “That energy was contagious.”
