BOYS BASKETBALL

The Tabb boys basketball team dismantled Poquoson in every aspect of the game during a 93-39 drubbing — the second the Tigers have handed to the Islanders this season.

As a result, Tabb advanced to the finals of the BayPort Holiday Tournament, which will be played Tuesday.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures, including Robert Sebastien and Terrell Sheffey, who scored 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Tabb opened the game on a 13-2 run thanks in large part to hyper-aggressive defense and easy points in transition. The Tigers were so soundly ahead that by the end of the first quarter, five reserve players were on the court. It was a game in which Tabb was able to unload their bench and spread the points around.

Nine of the 12 players on Tabb’s roster scored against Poquoson.

The second quarter was the most competitive as Tabb settled for 3-point attempts instead of attacking the lane, a strategy that helped open up the sizable lead.

A scary moment developed in the first half when Poquoson sophomore point guard Tyler Baurle delivered a hard foul in an attempt to stop a Tabb transition layup. Baurle swatted hard for the ball and immediately began clutching his wrist.

Baurle was taken into the locker room and did not return to the court.

The Tigers continued their relentless offensive assault in the second half as Sebastien attacked the basket. Sebastien logged 12 of his 19 points in the second half.

Late in the fourth quarter, Alex Brown, a player who does not see many minutes, was fed the ball on three straight possessions. The large Tabb contingency in the stands roared with every basket Brown sank.

Late Mistakes Doom York Against Gloucester

Despite leading for three quarters against Gloucester, late turnovers and penalties cost York a chance to advance to the finals of the BayPort Holiday Tournament.

Early in the game, York forward Eric Harp made his presence known as he used his tall frame to collect easy buckets in the paint. Even when his shots did not fall, Harp was earning trips to the charity stripe — nine in total in the first half alone.

During the first half of the second quarter it began to look like York was going to pull away from Gloucester thanks to a 12-2 run within the first three minutes of the quarter.

Like any good prize fighter, Gloucester took their lumps and came back counter-punching with a 14-5 run of their own to close out the first half, cutting York’s lead to 30-28.

“I told them we haven’t played our best basketball yet,” York coach Bobby Pearce said about his halftime talk with his players. “I still don’t think we’ve played our basketball yet. We’re still a work in progress. But we’ve got to continue to do the little things right and take care of the basketball in order to put us in position to win at the end of the ballgame. That’s just not what happened tonight.”

The Falcons were less aggressive in the second half, often settling for jump shots instead of attacking the paint. York’s free throw attempts plummeted from 16 in the first half to seven in the second half, including only three makes.

The York offense all but stalled during a fourth quarter that included only three made Falcon field goals. Despite the poor offensive output, York was within striking distance for a majority of the quarter.

Gloucester took advantage of a technical foul called on the Falcons with 1:10 left, sinking the technical free throw and pulling away from there to seal the win.
