Grafton in First Place of Wells Fargo Cup Standings After Fall Championships

grafton logoGrafton High School currently sits atop the leaderboard in the Group 4A standings of the Wells Fargo Cup after the fall championships.

Grafton earned points for strong finishes in boys and girls cross-country, cheerleading and volleyball.

The Wells Fargo Cup is a yearly award given out to Virginia High School League schools that have shown success across a wide array of athletics.

In each of the VHSL’s six groups, a school will be crowned Wells Fargo Cup champion for accumulating the most points between the fall, winter and spring athletic periods. Schools accumulate points by performing well during state championship events.

Six Historic Triangle schools earned points for fall championship appearances.

Below is a recap of how those schools earned their points:

Group 4A

Grafton, 137.5 points, 1st out of 27 schools: Grafton earned 40 points for finishing third in the cheerleading championships. Grafton earned 40 points for finishing third in the boys cross-country championships. Grafton earned 20 points for finishing seventh in the girls cross-country championships. Grafton earned 37.5 points for losing in the volleyball state semifinals.

Tabb, 115 points, 4th out of 27 schools: Tabb earned 50 points for winning a state title in field hockey. Tabb earned 35 points for finishing fourth in the boys cross-country championships. Tabb earned 30 points for finishing fifth in the girls cross-country championships.

Jamestown, 87.5 points, T-5th out of 27 schools: Jamestown earned 50 points for winning a state title in golf. Jamestown earned 37.5 points for advancing in the volleyball state semifinals.

Group 3A

Lafayette, 120 points, 3rd out of 20 schools: Lafayette earned 45 points for being runner-up for the state title in football. Lafayette earned 75 points from its cross-country programs — 40 points from the boys team for finishing third at the state meet and 35 points from the girls for finishing fourth at the state meet.

Warhill, 75 points, 8th out of 20 schools: Warhill earned 50 points by winning the state championship in volleyball. Warhill earned 25 points for finishing sixth in the boys cross-country championship meet.

Group 2A

Bruton, 30 points, 16th out of 21 schools: Bruton earned 30 points by finishing fifth in the 2A state girls cross-country championships.
