The Score: Warhill, Lafayette Volleyball Clinch State Tournament Berths

Just like Thursday’s 4A South championship between Jamestown and Grafton, the 3A East Region championship will be an all Bay Rivers District affair after Lafayette and Warhill each won their semifinal matchups Thursday night.

Warhill, playing a neutral site in Spotsylvania, defeated Kettle Run 3-1 in one semifinal while Lafayette won the other, also 3-1, against Loudoun Valley on the road.

The Lions, who won the final two sets 25-23, 25-1 after splitting the first two (27-25, 23-25), were led by junior hitter Alex Koon, who turned in a season-best performance with a game-high 34 kills. Megan Harrigan chipped in with 54 assists and Jewel Walters added 20 digs.

Lafayette also got a well-rounded effort from Julia Howard (50 assists, 20 digs), Kiersten Langerud (28 kills) and Abby Oren (17 digs, 13 kills) as the Rams defeated host Loudoun Valley 28-26, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21.

Both teams guaranteed themselves a spot in next week’s 3A state semifinals which will be held at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. First, the two teams will decide the inaugural 3A East Region title at 7 p.m. Saturday at Warhill High.
