Former Jamestown High volleyball standout Briana Sutton, who led the Eagles to back-to-back state tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012, is wasting no time making her presence felt at the college ranks.
Sutton, now a freshman starter at Christopher Newport University, recently led the Captains to the program’s first-ever Capital Athletic Conference championship.
For her efforts — she leads CNU with 295 kills, the most by any Captains freshman since 2009 — Sutton has been named the CAC Rookie of the Year and Co-Player of the Year.
Sutton has been at her best during CNU’s postseason run as she turned in a career-high 19 kills in the Captains’ 3-1 win over Marymount in the CAC tournament semifinals. She followed that performance up by posting a team-high 12 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Salisbury College in the tournament championship.
