We reported Wednesday night the Bay Rivers District made a strong showing at the 4A Conference 19 cross-country meet held in Smithfield. Ditto for the 3A Conference 25 meet, where district runners swept the top individual and team honors at Parker Park in South Hill.
Lafayette’s boys and girls won the team titles while York’s Dawson Connell and Warhill’s Miriam Buscher were the individual champions.
Lafayette’s boys, who won by more than 50 points over second place Warhill, were led by Jason Menzies (17:04.36), Konrad Steck (17:06), Derek Holdsworth (17:22.43) and Andrew Loper (17:26.91), who finished 3-6, respectively, although it was Connell who beat everyone to the finish line in 16 minutes, 39 seconds. Connell held off New Kent’s Andrew Carlin (16:41) for a narrow two-second victory.
In the girls’ race, Buscher held off Lafayette’s Adriana Hooks to win in 19:33.41. The Rams placed four other runners in the top 10 — Tanya Hoatson in sixth (21:27.70), Delaney Savage in seventh (21:33.42), Brook Crookston in ninth (22:21.01) and Summer Chambers in 10th (22:31.91) — to outscore runner-up York 34-51.
The top three teams advance to next week’s region meet along with the top 10 individuals not on one of the three qualifying teams.
It took a tie-breaker to determine the final team berth to regionals on the boys side as New Kent and York both finished with 87 points. The Trojans got the nod since their No. 6 runner, Holden Minor (19:20.37), finished ahead of the Falcons’ No. 6, Alasdair Thompson, who was 20 seconds behind at 19:40.84.
