Grafton Girls, Tabb Boys Claim Inaugural Conference 19 Cross-Country Titles

Bay Rivers District runners left an impressive mark — or footprint — at the inaugural Conference 19 cross-country meet held Wednesday at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield.

Grafton’s Rachel Bloxom and Tabb’s Baron Keiffer were the individual champions and also led their respective teams to titles.

Among the top eight boys and girls teams that qualified for next week’s Region 4A meet, six will represent the BRD while a strong majority of the top 15 individual finishers in each race hail from the district, as well.

Bloxom finished the 5K track in 19 minutes, 23 seconds — nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Lindsey Blanks of Tabb (20:10.70) — while Tacoma Mendelsohn placed third for the Clippers, whose 31 points bested the second-place Tigers (52) and third-place Jamestown (58).

Fourth-place Powhatan (108) will join Grafton, Tabb and Jamestown at next week’s Region 4A South meet.

In the boys’ race, Keiffer pulled away from teammate Severin Blenkush to win in 16 minutes flat. Blenkush took second in 16:44.70 and Bryce Williams placed seventh in 17:32.80 to lead the Tigers.

Tabb, which finished with 40 points as a team, will be joined by Grafton (55), Jamestown (64) and Powhatan (70) at next week’s region meet.

The Region 4A meet will be held Wednesday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville.
