Harold Parr Johnson, Jr., passed into eternal rest on March 10, 2026, at his home in New Kent County in the company of his loving wife and son.
Harold was born June 16, 1943, the only son of Harold Parr and Lois Barksdale Johnson. He became the much adored and sometimes pesky little brother to his big sister Teresa.
Harold or John, as known by family and many of his friends, never seemed to meet a stranger. His quick smile, infectious laugh and playful personality were engaging and led to many lifelong friendships. He graduated from E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg in 1961and Danville Technical Institute in 1963. Classmates from both stayed in touch and were very supportive throughout his illness.
It was in Danville that he met the love of his life, Betty Jean Stanley. After his return from overseas duty with the Air Force in 1967, they were married, moved to Charleston, SC, where he was stationed and began a lifetime of adventures together.
Spending time with family was his greatest pleasure and he never tired of it, but he had many interests and passions. One of which was classic cars, especially Mustangs. There was always a project car in the garage. A t-shirt with Mr. Fix It on it was his favorite and he truly could fix anything. He was an avid fan of his favorite college basketball team, going to every possible home game. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball so much he continued doing so even after his son was too old to play. Travel, which started as his wife’s passion soon became his as well and they were blessed to have the opportunities to experience the world. He was a long-time member of the New Kent Lions Club and very proud of his work with them.
Harold served four years in the Air Force as a jet engine mechanic during the Vietnam War including 18 months in the Philippines. A few years after leaving active duty he had the opportunity to become part of the Virginia Air National Guard as a full-time employee. That led to a very fulfilling career. He retired as a Fabrication Supervisor in 1994.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Lois Johnson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Betty Stanley Johnson, his son, Harold Parr Johnson III, one grandson, Dustin Johnson and wife Diana, as well as a precious great-granddaughter, Iris, whose visits brought him joy in his last months. He is also survived by one sister, Teresa MacGregor and husband Harry, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
