It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Van Readel, who departed this world on March 4, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on October 21, 1941, in Wisconsin, Donald’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and love.
Donald devoted 30 years of his life to serving his country as a member of the U.S. Army Military Police, rising to the esteemed rank of Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). His unwavering commitment to duty and his leadership inspired all those who served alongside him. A proud veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Donald’s bravery and valor were matched only by his humility and kindness.
Beyond his distinguished military career, Donald pursued his passions with vigor and joy. He found peace in the tranquility of fishing, nurtured the earth through gardening, crafted fine wines with patience, and explored his roots through genealogy. Each of these interests reflected his deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and his desire to connect with both nature and history.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Betty Jean (Minor) Readel; his father, Delbert E. Readel; and his mother, Virgil T. (Sharp) Readel. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in his surviving family: his sons, Donald V. Readel Jr., Darren V. Readel and his wife Cherril Moore Readel, and David V. Readel and his husband William F. Penny. He is also survived by his sister, Virdella Alice Yarbrough, four grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the values and memories he instilled in them.
In the hearts of those who knew him, Donald Van Readel spirit will endure, reminding us of the courage, devotion, and joy that defined his time on this earth.
