Athleen Seburn, age 96, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, with
her loving family at her bedside at Riverside Regional Medical Center MICU.
Athleen, best known to all as “Nan,” lived her 96 years on her own terms with a fiery spirit. She was unapologetic and never shied away from speaking her mind, yet she would give you the shirt off her back and was just as quick to cook a huge homemade meal, always making sure your belly was full. More than anything, she took the greatest pride in helping raise and love all of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by many cherished family members and dear friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Hester and her husband, Rick; her grandchildren, Dawn Maxon and husband, Paul, Deanna Peterson and husband Ralph, and Abigail Hinson and husband Brandon; her great-grandchildren Amanda, Tyler, Brody, Cash, and Cole; and her great-great-grandchildren Silas and Eliana. In addition, she leaves behind many loving family members and friends.
A very special thank you to Rose Potter, who became more than a caregiver over the last five years — she became family. Her love, patience, and constant presence brought Nan comfort and gave the family peace of mind. We can never thank her enough.
Her interment will be private, followed by a private family gathering celebrating her life with all of Nan’s favorite recipes.
