Melvin Henry Sawyer, a devoted husband, father, brother, and dedicated engineer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, love, and quiet strength.
A native of Newport News, Melvin was born to Henry and Jessie Sawyer and grew up with a keen curiosity and a deep appreciation for hard work qualities that guided him throughout his life. He pursued his passion for learning at Virginia Tech, where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. His lifelong dedication to higher learning shaped not only his career, but also the values he instilled in his family, encouraging curiosity, discipline, and a love for knowledge in those around him.
Melvin was married to Peggy Sawyer for 65 years. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, love, and devotion. Melvin was a devoted Christian and a member of Petsworth Baptist Church, where his unwavering faith left a lasting impact on his church family and all who knew him.
Melvin retired from the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, where he served with distinction as an Electrical Engineer. His commitment to precision, safety, and excellence left a lasting impact on colleagues and the missions he supported.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy; and his parents, Henry and Jessie Sawyer.
Melvin is survived by his three children, Melvin Harold Sawyer (Kim), Mary Katherine Hoover (Pat), and Timothy David Sawyer (Kinky) who will remember him as a steady source of wisdom and love. He also leaves behind his sister, Virginia Sue Sawyer, with whom he shared a lifelong bond.
