James M. Dopp, 85, of West Point, VA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on February 29, 2024.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings; his first wife, Nancy (Gladden) Dopp; and daughter, Melissa Dopp (Pattie Bland).
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Vicki; son, James Jeffrey (Alecia); daughter, Elizabeth Dopp; Vicki’s sons, Christopher (Heather), Matthew (Alexandra) and Robert Thompson; grandchildren, Danny, Stephen, Ava, Harrison, Henry and Harper.
Born in Amsterdam, NY, to James E. and Mildred (Melzer) Dopp, Jim and his siblings, Doris (Dudley) and David, were raised in Manlius, NY. A 1957 graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School, he was a veteran of the Air National Guard 138th Fighter Squadron (“The Boys From Syracuse”).
Retired from Southern States Cooperative, Jim was a Master Mason and member of West Point Masonic Lodge No. 238. He was also the past chair of the West Point Historical Society.
Jim loved spending time with his wife and family, was a voracious reader and learner, and had varied hobbies over the years, such as refurbishing classic cars, obtaining his pilot’s license, sailing on the Chesapeake, boating the Intracoastal Waterway, beekeeping, and more. Jim lived a rich and full life and will be dearly missed.
