Carl John Morris, 92

Carl John Morris, or CJ as his loving wife called him, departed this life in fine fashion at home on January 29, 2024. He was born into a Navy family just shy of 93 years ago in April of 1931. He lost Pat, his most precious sweetheart of 66 years, three years ago and is survived by his five children: Les Morris (Maggie), Lauri Leeper (Jeff), Kathy Phillips (J), Kristy DiPaola (Pete), and Lisa Strother (Mark). He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

At the ripe old age of 17, he enlisted in the Army, worked hard, and was rewarded with a commission. Subsequently, he met and married the love of his life, and they toured the world as a family of seven. After a 21-year career, he retired as a lieutenant colonel from Fort Shafter Army Post, Oahu, Hawaii, and he became an elementary and middle school teacher for Newport News Public Schools where he taught with discipline, care, humor, and aplomb; his students loved him. In retirement, he continued his passion for tennis – both playing and stringing rackets for friends and fellow tennis players. Additionally, he loved boating and sailing. His kids spent many a weekend fishing and skiing with their dad and grew up playing tennis. Mom elected to keep her feet on terra firma since she couldn’t swim and would acquiesce with a yearly, nervous boat ride.

Dad was respected by all as a man of integrity. He was hardworking, friendly, and always ready to lend a hand; he instilled these values in his kids of whom he was so proud. His keen sense of humor kept Pat, his kids, and his community laughing and marveling at his ability to lighten the moment instantly. His quickness with a quip was truly astounding. Dad was a role model beyond compare, teaching his kids and their spouses that family always comes first no matter what. Happily, Dad and Mom are now reunited as they always were meant to be. We envision them on the dance floor as they trip the light fantastic and marvel at how two young lovers could create such a loving family as this, oh, so many years ago. Here’s to you Dad – You are so loved!
