Eugene Moore, 96, of Newport News

Eugene Moore was born on February 4, 1928, in Orlando, Florida, to Edward Tucker Moore and Denzie Alexander Moore.

He attended Jones High School in Orlando, Florida. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army, where he retired as a Staff Sergeant (SSG) after 20 years of service. After retiring from the United States Army, Eugene began a second career as a security guard at Newport News Shipbuilders. He devoted another 20 years of working before deciding to retire for good.

Eugene was a longtime member of Colossian Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the Pastors Aide for a period of time, but he found his true joy singing in the Male Chorus. Eugene remained an active member of Colossian Baptist Church and the Male Chorus until his declining health prevented him from attending services.

He enjoyed life to the fullest and was a lifelong Washington Redskins (Commanders) fan despite their numerous losses. He enjoyed playing card games, listening to rhythm and blues, and spending time with his family and friends. He lived independently well into his nineties and was adamant up until the day before his death that he was getting his driver’s license renewed.

Eugene is preceded in death by his father, Edward Tucker Moore, mother, Denzie Alexander Moore, and brother-in-law, Arthur McAfee Jr.

He is survived by his son, Timothy Moore (Cathy) and grandchildren, all of Anchorage, Alaska; sister, Sylvia Moore McAfee of Atlanta, Georgia; nephew, Arthur McAfee, III (Anita) of Washington, DC; niece, Sylvia McAfee of Atlanta, Georgia; great-niece, Dylan McAfee of Washington, DC; longtime sweetheart, Susan Ann Moody and family, all of Newport News, Virginia; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Colossian Baptist Church, Newport News.  Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service.  Interment with full Military Honors to follow in the church cemetery.  Mr. Moore may be viewed beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of his service on Thursday.
