A Missouri man was arrested at a hotel near the Colonial Williamsburg visitor center Tuesday morning after police say he got into a drunken fight before assaulting an officer.

According to Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department, officers were called to the Woodlands Hotel and Suites, located at 105 Visitor Center Drive, around 2 a.m. in reference to reports of a fight involving an “intoxicated subject.”

Police found 47-year-old Andrew Leroy Duke of Chesterfield, Mo., at the hotel and arrested him for appearing drunk in public. Officers then spoke to the victim, who reported the two were arguing when Duke assaulted her.

The victim did not require medical attention, Riley said.

Duke was then transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. When officers arrived at the jail, Duke “became agitated” and struck one of the officers in the chest, Riley said.

The officer was not injured. Duke was charged with Domestic Assault and Assault on a Police Officer, Riley said.

According to Virginia code, assault on a law enforcement officer is a Class 6 felony, which carries a 6-month mandatory minimum sentence if Duke is found guilty.

Duke was arraigned in Williamsburg James City County General District Court Wednesday at 8 a.m.
