WILLIAMSBURG— Williamsburg Regional Library will celebrate the grand opening of its new Library Natural Playground on Saturday, April 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the James City County Library.

The Library says the community is invited to join WRL staff, partners, and supporters for an afternoon of outdoor fun as the library officially opens this unique space designed to inspire imaginative, nature-based play. Created in partnership with the Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation, local Kiwanis clubs, donors, and community partners, the library adds that the Library Natural Playground reflects WRL’s commitment to fostering creativity, learning, and connection for children and families.

“This playground represents years of collaboration and community support,” said WRL Director Sandy Towers. “We’re excited to offer families a place where children of all ages and abilities can learn, explore, and grow through outdoor play.”

Grand opening festivities will include:

  • Musician Chris Campbell live performance at 2 p.m.
  • Food trucks
  • Kiwanis train
  • Crafts
  • Special giveaways
  • Master Naturalist scavenger hunt

The library says that the fully accessible Library Natural Playground was designed by nationally recognized playground designer Ron King of the Natural Playgrounds Company. Features include play caves, a covered gazebo, a slide with rock scramble, a sand play area, musical elements, a story trail, and more.

As an outdoor extension of the Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio, the library states that the playground supports literacy development through sensory-rich, hands-on experiences that promote vocabulary growth, strengthen fine motor skills, and encourage storytelling and imaginative play. It adds that the addition of the playground to the James City County Library further establishes the library as a destination for families throughout the greater Williamsburg region.
