Hampton Roads residents don’t have to travel far to get into the patriotic spirit on Independence Day.
The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown at 200 Water St. (less than 15 miles from Newport News and 20 miles from Hampton) is hosting the Liberty Celebration on July 4, according to a news release from the museum.
From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., museum visitors can listen to music and observe interpretive programs, military drills and artillery demonstrations. Visitors can also learn about the challenges faced by the nation’s founders, and the men who signed the Declaration of Independence.
Admission to the museum is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children ages 6-12.
Here’s the day’s lineup of activities:
- All day until 3 p.m., see interpreters prepare 18th-century dishes on the hearth.
- 10:30 a.m., guests can train to be a member of the Virginia militia.
- 11 a.m., the Fifes and Drums of York Town will perform on the museum lawn
- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., learn how farmers became more self-sufficient during war time by growing and processing flax, cotton and wool.
- 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 30-minute presentations on key events, battles and leaders of the American Revolution in the Education Center classrooms.
- 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., historical interpreters will fire a salute to the nation’s independence.
- Noon, guests can participate in a reading of the Declaration of Independence.
- 1:30 p.m., guests can train as a member of Gen. George Washington’s Army.
Inside, the museum will also have a rare broadside of the Declaration of Independence, showings of the film “Liberty Fever” and a special exhibition, “Blast from the Past: Artillery in the War of Independence.”
