NEWPORT NEWS — Local adolescents will spend their summer learning valuable life skills like financial literacy and resume writing.

The 2018 Summer Training and Enrichment Program began this week and features 514 students, who will work at 113 different places within the city.

Since 2014, STEP has connected more than 1,200 adolescents with numerous different employment opportunities.

The 10-week program provides meaningful work readiness training and offers participants paid work experience, workshops, financial literacy and GED preparation classes, according to the STEP website.

STEP participants can work up to 30 hours per week and earn $7.25 or $8 per hour, depending on their completion of high school or GED.

This year, the program will include a workplace readiness coordinator who will work with participants throughout the summer on resume writing, how to interview and job searching.

The program will culminate with a graduation at noon on Aug. 23 at the City Center Marriott.
