NEWPORT NEWS — A local business is trying to heal life’s aches with extremely cold temperatures.
CRYO 17, 1047 J Clyde Morris Blvd., opened its doors on April 30 and is dedicated to providing cryotherapy spa to Hampton Roads residents.
“We like to describe ourselves as an ice bath on steroids,” said general manager Kamryn Lopez. “It’s a much quicker process and more comfortable. You don’t have to get wet.”
To begin, customers step into a cryogenic chamber for three minutes and during this time, the body is exposed to subzero temperatures.
Temperatures range from minus 130 degrees to minus 185 degrees. The three-minute treatment lowers a person’s skin surface temperature and starts to stimulate the body’s healing receptors.
CRYO17 has five certified technicians on staff, who monitor the entire process.
Cryotherapy is used to address health issues including joint pain, muscle soreness, weight loss and skin problems, according to a news release from CRYO17.
Cryotherapy has been used by many athletes including NBA star LeBron James and boxing champ Floyd Mayweather. People who utilize cryotherapy before exercise claim they experience increased energy, endurance and flexibility, according to CRY017’s website.
In order to feel the full range of the healing powers, CRY017 staff recommends at least three sessions.
A single session is $30, a five-session package is $125 and a 10 session package is $200.
So far business has been good, Lopez said.

CRYO17 has sold out four out of the five days that they’ve been open. CRYO17 can hold up to 55 sessions a day.
“We’ve had a really good response from the community,” Lopez said.
