WILLIAMSBURG— Jamestown Rediscovery is kicking off the 2026 excavation season with special tours, archaeology-in-action, and more on Saturday April 11.

For over 30 years, archaeology has revealed the incredible history of Jamestown, from the true location of James Fort to the site of the First General Assembly.

A full slate of educational programs and living history experiences is planned for opening day at Historic Jamestowne, offering visitors an in-depth look at early colonial life and the origins of American democracy.

All-day events include “The Buried Truth: Archaeology in Action,” where guests can observe active excavations at the original 1607 James Fort and speak with archaeologists about recent discoveries near Statehouse Ridge, weather permitting. At the Memorial Church, “In the Footsteps of Democracy” invites visitors to stand on the site of the 1619 General Assembly and explore the foundations of the original 1617-18 church. The Natalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium Museum will feature “From Fort to Port: Legacies of 1619,” highlighting Jamestown’s growth, the tobacco economy and the experiences of Africans, Virginia Indians and indentured servants.

Living history activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At James Fort, visitors can meet Dan Firehawk Abbott of the Nanticoke people to learn about Powhatan culture and interactions with English settlers. Blacksmith demonstrations will showcase one of Jamestown’s earliest trades, while carpenters will demonstrate how colonists constructed the fort using period tools and techniques.

Special tours are scheduled throughout the day, including an archaeology walking tour of James Fort at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., departing from the Pocahontas statue. “An Audience with Captain John Smith” will be held at 12:15 p.m. at the Memorial Church, offering insights into Smith’s leadership and exploration of the Chesapeake Bay. At 1 p.m., a guided tour led by a public historian will examine the relationship between the English colonists and the Powhatan Paramount Chiefdom through archaeological evidence.

Archaeology Opening Day is included with admission to Historic Jamestowne. Tickets information and pricing can be found on the Historic Jamestowne website.
