YORK COUNTY — Lackey Clinic, a free healthcare clinic based in York County, is celebrating the holidays with a special door decorating competition while honoring the clinic’s 30th anniversary.
The clinic staff created 12 different door decorations that were ultimately judged and put to a vote. The Judges’ Awards for the doors were voted on by representatives from a few of the Clinic’s supporting agencies: Williamsburg Health Foundation, Virginia Health Care Foundation, United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, and Williamsburg Community Foundation. Doors were also voted on by the public and were chosen for People’s Choice Awards.
“We enjoy coming up with new door designs each year for everyone to vote on, and we love filming our Christmas dance video to showcase our doors. It is amazing to see our voters ‘Share the Care at Christmas’ as many make donations to help us continue caring for our patients,” said John Smethurst, Lackey Clinic Marketing and Communications Specialist.
The 2025 winners included “When Santa’s Away” for best overall, “We Shine Together” for reason for the season, “Naughty or Nice Plinko” for Jolly Holly, and “The Red-Nosed Doorway” for most unique.
Public winners included “Naughty or Nice Plinko” in first place, “Oh Dentist-Tree Advent Calendar” in second place, and “Sweetest Name” in third place.
Pictures of the winning doors can be found on Lackey Clinic’s website.
Founded in 1995, Lackey Clinic celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2025. The Clinic was co-founded by Dr. Jim and Cooka Shaw, who began offering free medical care to the community of Lackey. Today, the Clinic now serves 2,767 patients in the state of Virginia.

As part of the celebration, the clinic was featured at the annual conference of the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) this past fall. Lackey Clinic’s CEO, Larry Trumbore, and Medical Director, Dr. Jill Cottel, presented on “Tech-Powered Solutions: Expanding Equitable Health Access and Driving Better Outcomes.” The two shared how Lackey Clinic has adopted and refined a Hybrid Care Model over the past five years — one that is now validated to be cost-effective, scalable and replicable.
“Through the mighty hand of God, we’ve been blessed with the opportunity to pioneer this model,” said Trumbore, “and we feel called to be a blessing to others by sharing our knowledge and experience to help clinics across the country serve more patients with excellence and compassion.”
The Clinic’s Hybrid Care Model provides high-quality services for patients through in-person care, telehealth and telemental health and digital and virtual care. In-person services allow the clinic’s providers to offer hands-on, comprehensive care. Telehealth reduces barriers for patients such as transportation and time off work, while telemental health connects patients to licensed mental health professionals. Digital services support patients’ chronic disease management and preventative care via automated text-based protocols.
Lackey Virtual Care provides an online medical diagnosis and treatment service operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The clinic is offering it free of charge for all Virginians aged 18 years or older, regardless of whether they are current Lackey Clinic patients or not. Lackey Virtual Care is now caring for patients living in 98 of the counties and independent cities in Virginia.
In the spirit of Christmas, the clinic has launched a holiday donation drive, dubbed Share the Care at Christmas. Donations will be used by the clinic to continue caring for the uninsured patients it serves.
