WILLIAMSBURG — Dreams Gymnastics Center has much to celebrate, but come July, it’ll be welcoming former Team USA and NCAA Champion Katelyn Ohashi for a day any area gymnast won’t forget.
After attending similar events with their team, Galina and Pavlin Yordanova inquired about bringing an elite-level athlete to their gym in Williamsburg.
“The events were such great experiences for our girls. All the gymnasts we met were very interactive with the girls, from signing posters and giving high fives. It was very encouraging and for them to meet such big names and Olympians, it can be very inspiring,” Galina said.
The money raised from donations for the event will go toward purchasing new equipment for the gym.
Many of the girls who train with the Yordanovas follow collegiate and elite gymnastics heavily and one day hope to find themselves competing at that level. The opportunity to train alongside and learn from one of the top gymnasts in the nation was something that the Yordanovas couldn’t refuse.
“Seeing in person what you can do with gymnastics at a high level is so important. Our girls can look up to them and see someone who was just like them at one point in time,” Galina says.
Ohashi is the only gymnast to ever beat Simone Biles, but went viral for her floor routines as a collegiate gymnast at UCLA. In 2018, Ohashi and the UCLA Bruins won the NCAA Gymnastics National Championship title.
Other accolades that Ohashi earned include:
- 10-time All-American
- 10-time PAC-12 specialist of the week
- 2019 PAC-12 balance beam and floor exercise co-champion
- 2018 NCAA and PAC-12 floor exercise co-champion
- 2018 NCAA team champion
- Scored 11 perfect 10s
- Four-time USA Junior National Team member
- 2013 American Cup all-around champion
- 2011 junior national champion
Coming off a record-breaking championship meet for Dreams, where many of the competitors placed in the top 10 of the state, the girls that train in the homeschool program are looking forward to working with Ohashi.
“I’ve always been a fan of Katelyn Ohashi’s and I just love her floor routine,” Ezra, a Dreams gymnast, said.
“I’m excited for her to show us how we can get better at performing gymnastics,” Lainee, another gymnast said.
On July 22, Ohashi will be at Dreams Gymnastics Center for an all-day clinic. Anyone who registers for the event and raises $250 can attend the clinic with Ohashi. The top two fundraisers will be able to sit next to Ohashi at a private lunch. The top 30 fundraisers will be taught Ohashi’s viral floor routine.
Other fundraising prizes include the opportunity to have Ohashi critique routines, write inspiring journal messages, selfies, autographed posters, and more.
“We have such great athletes here and bringing in such a big name will be a good opportunity for everyone in the community,” Galina said. “The experience of meeting someone who they’ve watched do exactly what they want to do is priceless.”
