James City County has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of effects from Hurricane Florence.

The declaration is a precautionary move that allows the county to begin emergency preparations, according to a county news release.

The track of Hurricane Florence, which intensified into a Category 4 storm on Monday, remains uncertain. While forecasters expect Florence to make landfall near Wilmington, North Carolina, the storm could bring heavy rains and flooding to the Historic Triangle.

Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation are cleaning out drainage structures in advance of the storm, the county said, and will be available around the clock in the coming days to respond to damaged roadways and downed trees.

James City County officials urge residents to remain informed about the approaching storm by signing up for alerts at www.jccalert.org.

James City County also has announced the following cancellations because of the storm:

  • The Neighborhood Forum previously scheduled for Sept. 12 has been canceled.
  • The Chesapeake Bay and Wetlands Meeting scheduled for Sept. 12 has been postponed until the Oct. 10 meeting.
  • The Harvest Festival scheduled for Sept. 15 has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.
