Former William & Mary basketball standout Marcus Thornton signed a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, according to the team’s twitter account.

After 10 days, Cleveland will have the option to extend the contract or send Thornton back to the team’s development league affiliate, Ohio’s Canton Charge.

The Cavaliers, who sit in third place in the Eastern Conference standings, will face the Washington Wizards on TNT at 8 p.m. on Thursday night.

Thornton previously spent time with the NBA G League’s Maine Red Claws and Ohio’s Canton Charge. In 2016, he spent time overseas in Australia with the Sydney Kings and then in Italy with Victoria Libertas Pesaro.

In his time with the Charge this season, Thornton has averaged 18.8 points per game, three rebounds and 2.9 assists.

Thornton, William & Mary’s all-time leading scorer, was the 45th pick overall in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.

He became the first Tribe player to be named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year after averaging 20 points per game as a senior in 2014-15. He was also selected as an Associated Press All-American after leading the Tribe to the 2015 CAA Regular Season Championship.

Thornton set team highs in points, three-pointers made, games played and minutes played during his time with the Tribe.

During his senior season, Thornton was named a finalist for the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year award and the Jerry West Division I Shooting Guard of the Year, presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
