York School Board Approves Next Year’s Capital Improvement Program

York Hall
The York County School Board met at York Hall (above) Monday night and voted on the CIP.

Next year’s list of projects and associated costs in the York County School Division have officially passed the school board and will head to the York County Board of Supervisors for approval.

Each year, YCSD administration puts together a Capital Improvement Program — a list of upcoming projects in the next 10 years. The division’s final draft, passed tonight, heads to the supervisors as both a request of funding and a heads-up to supervisors for future needs in the school division.

This year’s CIP details $12.7 million in projects for next year, about $7 million more than the funding the received from the county for the current year. The extra cost comes largely from an $8 million project to add 10 classrooms and a gym to Waller Mill Elementary — the only school in the division without a gym.

Along with the $8 million project at Waller Mill, the division is asking for $3.2 million to replace outdated heating and cooling equipment at Magruder Elementary. The division is also asking for $850,000 for partial roof replacements at both Waller Mill and Magruder Elementary, $250,000 for replacement of various water heating systems, $200,000 to replace security cameras at elementary schools, $100,000 for track repair at Grafton and Tabb, and $75,000 and $50,000 to replace exterior doors and the gym floor, respectively, at York High.

In November, a presentation of the CIP showed the division plans on building a new $23 million middle school to begin construction in the summer of 2016.

The document’s next stop is the York County Board of Supervisors where it will be considered as a part of the county’s budget process.
