W&M Sets School Record for Most Fulbright Scholars in a Single Year

SH-Fulbright-logoThe College of William & Mary broke its institutional record for most Fulbright student grants awarded to its graduates in one year.

William & Mary boasted a record of 13 Fulbright scholars in 2010 and this year, 14 graduates received the grant that will allow them to travel overseas and study.

In August, WY Daily reported that W&M students Brett Evans, Morrison Mast, Michelle Repper, Chris Engebretson, Angela Hales, Libby Hennemuth, Alex McGrath, Dana McKelvey, Kristine Mosuela, Emma Paynter, Judson Peverall, Marial Tavakoli and Kyra Zemanick received Fulbright money.

Since that time, Angela Hales declined the grant and Dylan Murray and Sophie Berman, both W&M students, received Fulbright grants to raise the total Fulbright scholars from the college this year to 14.

Murray will travel to Brazil to research environmental and economic impacts of Amazonian payment for ecosystem services programs. Berman will go to Colombia on an English teaching assistantship.

The other Fulbright scholars’ destinations and their courses of study are listed in the August article.

The Fulbright program is the largest U.S. student and young professional overseas educational exchange program. According to us.fulbrightonline.org, the program was signed into law in 1946 by Harry S. Truman after Senator William Fulbright came up with the idea to use surpluses from World War II to fund an international educational program.
