WILLIAMSBURG— The Grocery Outlet donated $1,000 to the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank on April 9 during its ribbon-cutting in celebration of the grand opening.

Grocery Outlet has been around for 80 years and started as an Army Navy surplus store and has evolved over the years. Grocery Outlet is explained by the company to be an extreme value grocer that strives to have savings and high-quality, name-brand groceries, noting particularly having a selection of natural and organic products. It is also an opportunistic grocer, meaning the stock does rotate based on what can be obtained from supplies such as goods with obsolete packaging.

“I love this community, I’ve raised family here, raised my kids, been here for 15 years, and I’m just really proud. I’m proud of this team and what we’ve been doing,” said store manager Philip Hart.

The Virginia Peninsula Food Bank was established in 1986. According to the non-profit, for the fiscal year ending June, 2024, the Foodbank’s programs, monthly mobile food pantry distributions, and partner agencies have had over 458,000 visits compared to the fiscal year ending June 2023 with 323,000 visits.

“Congratulations on this store opening, it’s going to be a wonderful opportunity for our neighbors in Williamsburg to shop at some great prices and great products that fantastic,” said Robert “Bob” Latvis, Jr. the president and CEO of the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank. “And this charitable donation is fantastic, and just for a $1,000, that’s 3,000 meals that we will be able to provide with that, and that’s incredible. We’re having to stretch this spring with donations and certainly welcome another retail partner.”

“We’re excited to have you located in the shopping center. The revitalization that’s happened here over a number of years has been tremendous,” said Douglas Pons the Mayor of Williamsburg.

The Grocery Outlet will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is located in Williamsburg’s Midtown Row at 208 Monticello Ave., where Earth Fare used to be. For more information, visit the official website.
