NEWPORT NEWS — Leon Monro Hicks, aged 43, left this world suddenly on Monday, September 6, 2021 at his home in Newport News, VA. Monro, as he is affectionately known by family, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska.
In the midst of life setbacks, he always aimed for excellence. Leon completed his secondary education in the Newport News Public schools, graduating from Menchville High School. He further sharpened his skills as a Food Service Specialist in the United States Marines. After his tour of duty, he continued food service in many area restaurants.
Throughout his lifetime, he nourished people around him with love, faith, kindness, encouraging words and an uncanny ability to give “bear hugs” to reach others in a deep and positive way.
His family meant everything to him. He enjoyed simple pleasures like joking and chatting with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Victoria Hicks, his grandmother Marjorie Dorsey, his aunts Annette Phillips and Gloria Winston.
Leon is survived by his wife, Shonda Hicks, his children, Jayda Camp, Iyana, Inyshia, Imani, Leon Jr, and Isis Hicks, two sisters, June Hicks and Marjorie (Rodell) Jacob, three brothers, Howard Hicks, Antonio Banks, Reginald Phillips, aunt Merna Perry, uncle Howard (Dorothy) Phillips, many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Family, friends, and others whose lives were touched are invited by Altmeyer Funeral Home, 7415 River Road, Newport News, 23607 to a graveside service to be held
September 23, 2021 at 9:00 am at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23424 to reminisce, grieve, and support each other.
