A 33-year-old woman was struck and killed by a cement truck while riding her bicycle on Old Stage Road Monday morning, according to a news release from James City County Police.
According to the release, at approximately 9:45 a.m., JCC Police responded to Old Stage Road near the I-64 overpass in reference to a bicyclist, who had been struck by a motor vehicle.
The victim, identified as Theresa A. Morales, 33, of James City County, was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was biking on the right shoulder of the roadway, heading to work at the Subway inside of Star Express, when she attempted to cross to the other side of the road near the I-64 overpass and was struck by a cement truck driven by a 44-year-old Hayes man, the release stated.
According to the release, preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was heading east in the left lane and observed the bicyclist riding on the right shoulder of the roadway when she began to merge into the roadway. The driver sounded his horn and swerved to the left but was unable to avoid the collision.
Police believe Morales was listening to music on headphones at the time and did not hear the truck’s horn. It is also believed she was not wearing a helmet.
Eastbound lanes of Old Stage Road near the I-64 overpass were closed for approximately two hours and 45 min.
According to JCCPD, the crash remains under investigation and no charges against the cement truck driver are expected.
