Members of the Williamsburg-James City County School Board reviewed renderings of several assembly areas planned for the school division’s fourth middle school during its work session Tuesday night.

Michael Hall, president of educational facility planning company Fanning Howey, presented visuals for four areas of the school: The collaboration areas, which will be an open space on all three floors for teachers to assemble groups of students; A combined cafeteria and auditorium space referred to as the “auditeria;” Gathering stairs, which are designed to be a space for students to relax and study; and the library or media center, which designers describe as the school’s “research commons.”

Hall also presented a video of a 360-degree rendering of the exterior of the school.

The fourth middle school will be built at the site of the former James Blair Middle School, which currently serves as the school division’s central office. The school will be able to accommodate 608 students, Hall said.

The school division will recommend a bid for the general construction of the main school building during the school board’s Aug. 16 meeting. Construction would begin in the fall and conclude in time for a September 2018 opening.
