VIRGINIA BEACH — The Virginia Aquarium will recycle more than 20 tons of electronic items and household hazardous waste that it collected with help from the city’s Public Works Department.
The waste was collected as part of the aquarium’s winter e-cycling event, which collects and recycles electronic trash that would otherwise be sent to landfills, according to the city manager’s weekly update to the City Council.
In total, 41,500 pounds were amassed. That includes:
- 3,420 pounds of latex paint
- 610 pounds of lead acid batteries
- 465 pounds of household batteries
- 87 pounds of fluorescent bulbs
- 23 propane tanks
The aquarium has collected more than 250 tons of electronic material since launching the program in 2009, according to the update.
