Every month during the school year, the York County School Division recognizes seniors from each of the school division’s four high schools for their exceptional achievements in academics and community involvement to receive the Senior of the Month Award.
The York County School Board will recognize the four seniors in the school division for their outstanding contributions to their community and their schools at its meeting Jan. 26.
The YCSD Seniors of the Month for January are:
Shai-Quana Branch of Bruton High School
Branch has stood out for her artistic achievements at Bruton, contributing as a student in the YCSD School of the Arts dance program for four years. During that time, she has also excelled academically, maintaining a 4.50 GPA, receiving academic high honors each year, and gaining admission to Bruton’s chapter of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.
She has also established herself as a leader at Bruton, serving as president of the Spanish Honor Society and vice president of the Health Occupations Student Association. In 2014, she received the William & Mary Leadership.
Kristyn Gatling of Tabb High School
Gatling has taken on several leadership roles during her time at Tabb, including serving as student body president this year, two terms as president of her class, and captaining the Tabb debate and forensics teams.
She has also shined academically, maintaining a 4.76 GPA and achieving the top ranking for her class. Gatling was selected to attend Governor’s School, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction and is a member of four national honor societies.
Gatling also has a talent for music, singing in Tabb’s female musical ensemble and being selected to the all-district chorus.
Helen Landers of Grafton High School
Landers has distinguished herself as a musician at Grafton. She leads the award-winning Grafton Marching Band as a drum major, while also shining as a multi-instrumentalist. She is first chair flutist in the Grafton Wind Ensemble, plays saxophone in the jazz ensemble and bassoon in the symphonic band. She received all-district band recognition in 2013 and 2014, and was selected to play in honor bands at Virginia Tech and Christopher Newport University. She also performs in the community, playing in the Fifes & Drums of Yorktown.
Landers has also stood out as an athlete at Grafton, playing on the school’s junior varsity club lacrosse team and serving as captain as a junior.
David Mollenkamp of York High School
Mollenkamp has had academic success as a student at York, receiving the American Legion Scholastic Achievement Medal. His achievements have earned him selection to Virginia Boys State and the Latin Honor Society.
He has also been a leader in extracurricular activities, participating in York’s Model United Nations and National Junior Reserve Officer Training Corporation.
Mollenkamp has also shined as an athlete at York, playing on the school’s golf and indoor track and field teams, and serving as co-captain of the tennis team.
York County School Division Names 2015 Science Fair Winners
More than 300 York County students participated in the school division’s Science Fair last week. The theme of the 2015 event was “Dare to Dream,” with 232 projects going before panels of guest judges from local colleges, universities and businesses. First, second and third place winners are invited to apply to the regional Tidewater Science Fair, which will be held at Old Dominion University March 14.

Hampton Roads Academy Puts on Winter Musical
Hampton Roads Academy will put on The Phantom Tollbooth Jr. in the Svein J. Lassen Auditorium.
The show focuses on a boy named Milo and his dog, Tock, as they venture through a strange land of numbers and words, aided by the princesses Rhyme and Reason.
The show will be presented 7 p.m. Jan. 23, 24, 30 and 31. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. Additional information can be found at HRA’s website.
